Hot Stone Massage
This is an opportunity to be nourished by one of nature’s simplest yet more powerful gifts — stones. The heat from the stones penetrates deeper tissues of the body, allowing the massage to be more effective. We use basalt stones — a kind of volcanic rock, rich in magnesium and iron. A cool marble stone may also be used (perhaps at the end of the session) to provide contrast and energetic balance.
What are the benefits?
Connection to and support from the healing power of nature
Grounding, especially as facilitated by the iron content of the stones — the physical body feels “at home”
Deep relaxation
Tension release both in muscles and the deep fascia
What can I expect from a Hot Stone Massage?
Massage oil (as opposed to a massage cream or lotion) will be used to ensure a comfortable glide from the stones. Hot stones may be placed in strategic places to provide deep, comforting, warming compression, while other hot stones will be used as an extension of the therapist’s hands to massage you. Expect the majority of touch in this treatment to come from the stones themselves!
Heat sensitivity varies from person to person and from day to day, so it is crucial that you communicate with your therapist if a stone is, or becomes, too hot or is otherwise uncomfortable.
While it is advisable to be well-hydrated before and after a massage, this is especially so for hot stone massage. Please drink plenty of water!
